🌳🚶♂️ Educational & Creative Walk – Tuškanac to Cmrok (18 April, 10:00)
Ahead of International Earth Day, the Art Center invites you to an educational & creative walk through Tuškanac, guided by Dr. Ivan Pilaš, senior research associate at the Croatian Forest Research Institute. We meet at the wooden pavilion on Tuškanac and follow a gentle route towards Cmrok, exploring the landscape of Zagreb’s urban forests.
📅 When & meeting point
📅 date: 18 April
⏰ time: 10:00
📍 meeting point: wooden pavilion at Tuškanac
🎯 endpoint: Cmrok, where we finish with an outdoor art session
🌲 What you will learn – 5 thematic blocks
During the walk, we cover five main topics that reveal how city forests work and why they matter:
From the Sava River to Sljeme
natural gradation of vegetation from lowland floodplain forests by the Sava to mountain forests on Sljeme
how soil, water and climate shape forest types
Biodiversity of city forests
getting to know Zagreb’s mixed forests, their structure and natural development
why diverse species composition is key to ecosystem resilience
The value of urban forests
how city forests clean the air, cool the city, store water and prevent floods
their role as spaces for recreation, rest and social life
Climate change impacts
how droughts, storms and pests increasingly affect forest health and stability
what we can actually notice as everyday walkers and citizens
Why do we see vegetation as green?
an accessible explanation of light reflection, chlorophyll and colour
how satellites are used to monitor vegetation and forest condition from above
🎨 Open‑air art workshop on Cmrok – forest postcard
Once we reach Cmrok, the walk turns into an open‑air art workshop. Inspired by what we have seen and learned, participants will:
choose a motif (trees, canopies, forest textures, “satellite‑like” patterns of the landscape…)
create their own unique postcard inspired by forest, nature and satellite imagery of city woodlands
It is an opportunity to immediately transform new knowledge into a personal visual story that you take home.
